The Play Therapy Room

HOW DOES PLAY THERAPY WORK?

  • Play Therapy is a model that acknowledges that children communicate naturally  through  the language of play; it is a child-led intervention
  • Play therapy is intended for children who need to work through their issues and find a way to make sense of their world
  • Play therapy is particularly effective with children who cannot, or do not want to talk about their problems
  • It can play a major role in supporting behavioural change, by providing a safe environment for the child to work through the issues himself, at his or her own speed
  • When children encounter a tough problem, they do not always have the ability to solve the problem alone, or communicate what is going on to someone they trust
Below you can read two, real life stories of children who benefited from Dove Play Therapy.  All names have been changed to protect their identities, but all other facts are true.
If you would like to know more, or have an initial, free 15 minute discussion whether play therapy could help your child, then please contact me to arrange an appointment.

George
George's Story (names changed)
George lost his father, when he was very young. Coming to the  Play Therapy Room became a very important part of his week. It gave him a place to be and to be heard. By using the Tool Kit George explored his loss. His grieve had a place, his sadness and anger could be expressed in a safe way and he started a healing process as sessions went by.

The room and the Tool Kit

It’s a place where the children can build on their ‘inner strength’ and find a direction to process and organise their world through play and art materials around them.
  • Self healing takes place in a positive environment.
  • Psychological healing occurs on many levels - within and outside our awareness.
  • Play and creativity operate on impulses from outside our awareness at an unconscious level.

In the Play Therapy room a Play Therapist is both a witness and a partner in a process that leads the child to a greater understanding of his or herself and the world.
The child will have access to a Play Therapy Tool Kit, which includes:
  • Sand trays with miniatures
  • Musical instruments,
  • Art materials e.g. paint, collage and clay
  • Role play
  • Puppets
  • Stories

Play Therapy uses a variety of play and creative arts techniques to alleviate chronic, mild and moderate psychological and emotional conditions, mostly responding to the child's wishes.
